Living in Sunset Beach, North Carolina

Sunset Beach Office

Sunset Beach, NC

is the smallest and quietest of three barrier islands which make up South Brunswick Islands. The flavor of Sunset Beach real estate is the small town atmosphere that’s still close to all the amenities.

This wonderful cozy island is approximately 3 miles long with wide sandy white shoreline. The island offers a large natural habitat that creates a perfect environment from Loggerhead Sea Turtles, foxes and much more. If you would like to take a hike on a deserted barrier island, feel free to take a walk out on Bird Island which is the southwestern tip of Sunset Beach. Bird Island is approximately 1300 acres of natural coastal landscape. Several state and federally listed birds use the Bird Island habitats for nesting or feeding. These include the threatened piping plover, the endangered wood stork and the black skimmer, which is a state species of special concern.

The island of Sunset Beach is well known for its historic floating one lane pontoon bridge. This is currently the only access to the island. This unique bridge creates a sense of nostalgia that seems to take you back in time. Currently a new high-rise bridge is under construction and is expected to be completed in 2010.

The amenities located just off the island but within town limits include many local shops, putt-putt courses, and a planetarium which offers many programs for children and adults alike. Nearby is the town of Calabash which is considered to be the “Seafood Capital of the World” due to the many restaurants.

Sunset Beach is North Carolina’s southern most beach and is less than 10 minutes by car from the NC/SC state line. Just after crossing the state line into South Carolina you will find Little River, SC, Cherry Grove, SC, and Myrtle Beach, SC all within a 15 minute drive. Myrtle Beach, SC is considered to be the “Golf Capital of the World”.

The island of Sunset Beach, NC is dedicated to preserving its small town atmosphere. The local coastal environment and the close proximity to amenities are the main reason visitors and residents love the island so much.
